Background of the Study:
Urban housing conditions in Onitsha North significantly influence the health outcomes of children, with substandard living environments contributing to the prevalence of childhood diseases. Overcrowding, poor sanitation, and inadequate infrastructure have been linked to increased incidences of respiratory infections, gastrointestinal disorders, and other health challenges among children (Nwankwo, 2023). This study critically explores the interplay between urban housing conditions and childhood diseases, focusing on how inadequate housing exacerbates health risks. The research examines socio-economic factors, environmental hazards, and public health policies that collectively impact the well-being of urban children (Okafor, 2024). By incorporating epidemiological data and household surveys, the study aims to identify specific housing-related determinants of childhood illnesses. The investigation also considers the role of government interventions and community initiatives in mitigating these health risks, emphasizing the need for improved housing policies and infrastructure development to promote healthier living conditions (Ikechukwu, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
Substandard urban housing in Onitsha North has led to a rise in childhood diseases, with overcrowding and poor sanitation significantly impacting health outcomes. The current housing conditions are inadequate to meet the health needs of children, necessitating urgent policy interventions (Nwankwo, 2023). This study aims to address these challenges by identifying key determinants and proposing sustainable solutions (Okafor, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of housing conditions on childhood health.
  • To identify the key determinants linking poor housing and childhood diseases.
  • To propose policy recommendations to improve urban housing and reduce childhood illnesses.

Research Questions:

  • How do housing conditions affect childhood disease prevalence in Onitsha North?
  • What are the main environmental and socio-economic factors contributing to childhood illnesses?
  • What policy measures can improve housing conditions and child health outcomes?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H₁: Poor housing conditions significantly increase the prevalence of childhood diseases.
  • H₂: Environmental factors in substandard housing contribute to higher rates of illness.
  • H₃: Policy interventions in housing can reduce the incidence of childhood diseases.

Significance of the Study:
This study is critical for improving public health by linking housing quality with childhood health outcomes. Its findings will inform policy reforms and interventions aimed at creating healthier urban environments for children (Ikechukwu, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing urban housing conditions and their impact on childhood diseases in Onitsha North Local Government Area, Anambra State, focusing exclusively on health outcomes related to housing within this urban setting.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Urban Housing Conditions: The quality and adequacy of residential buildings in urban areas.
  • Childhood Diseases: Health conditions commonly affecting children, often linked to environmental factors.
  • Epidemiological Data: Information related to the incidence, distribution, and control of diseases.
